Winchester 1200 Pump Damage?

I use my 12 ga pump for my under the bed and Airstream travel safety partner. In the past I always kept it loaded with 5 rounds of.00 in the magazine ready to go after slamming one in the chamber with that beautiful sound that they make. I find, that perhaps in the 10 years that I have owned this weapon that I have actually put maybe 5 or 6 rounds through the barrel at stray dogs and coyotes.

This weapon is not my hunting weapon nor used just for putting lead downrange. It is for close range land and home defence. As such the useage is limited. The problem: In using it so seldom; but keeping it loaded with an empty chamber am I damaging it in any way? My concern is the spring there in the magazine..........Am I compressing it and causing damage?.........thanks guys.........Dennis

I doubt it. I've done the same for years without issue. Change out the buckshot for bird shot (much cheaper) and shoot it just to confirm.

Dennis,

Check your shells often so that they don't swell in the chamber and get stuck.....LIke BCZOOM recommends, shoot it once in a while just to know it is still working....

It will work perfect !!!!

Just like the rounds we all keep in magazines for pistols & automatic guns, they will be fine !!!!

Rusty,

On the side of the barrel it says 12 Ga, 2 3/4 inch chamber...........

I really like it cause it is a fairly short weapon to use in closer quarters.........Thanks guys.........Perhaps once a year when I zero in my Garrand, I need to pump a few rounds down that barrel.

How long do you think 00 shells will stay dependable?.........

God bless..........Dennis

If they are plastic cased and not the old waxed paper ones 15 years is not too old. I fired some slug loads in 2007 that were almost 20 years old and they worked fine. Dropped a deer at 60 yds. one shot. The biggest concern is the humidity where they are stored.

I agree with muleman on the humidity ~~~

If kept in a climate controlled atmoshere ammunition should last almost indefinitely.

It just depends on how it's been stored.

In moderate temperatures, and moderate humidity, commercial ammo has a shelf life of 50+ years. Military ammo is good for even longer.

Under high humidity and large temperature fluctuation conditions, sometimes it will lose it's potentency over 5-10 years or will simply fail to fire.

This is assuming we're talking about modern smokeless powder. Blackpowder cartridges break down rather more quickly.

i save all them packs that come in food or other stuff that absorb moisture. they have them in pill bottles and just about everythuing you could imagine. i save them up and toss them in my boxs of ammo and if i have guns in cases i drop a few of them in there too.as for as mag springs go i have my glock mags loaded fully and i keep them that way and it's been well over 5/6 years like that and they still work perfectly when needed.what breaks down the metal is the flexing back and forth meaning loading and unloading them so acually you do more damage to them ar the range then you will if you leave them loaded.my ak/ar mags i leave 5 rounds out of them and only load them up with 25 rounds.

Hey Peanut , they call it Silica Gel Desiccant >>> Purchase it by the bulk >>> Save many $$$$$$ ....... They sell it all over the internet , they have some on ebay, but it's much more on ebay$$$$$

We have it in all our gun vaults, powder magazines !!! Also, we have the humidity indicators in everything . We purchased the Silica Gel with the indicator crystals. When they start turning pink, just put the batch in the oven and heat 'em up until the crystals turn blue again. Good for years to come .... You can use the Silica Gel forever, over & over again .... Can't tell you the last time I've seen a pink crystal, maybe seven or nine years ago. It depends on how much you open which gun vault up. And how many times you go in and out of the powder magazines. All you are doing in lettting in moisture in the air in.... But, that is what we have the Silica Gel Desiccant in there for, to take out the moisture level.

This is what itlooks like with the crystals in it , to indicate when it needs to be" heated & treated " >>>>>

One on the left, has no indicator crystals, the one in the middle, is all indicator crystals, and the one on the right has the indicator crystals mixed, to let you know when it's time >>>>

We also use this in our camera cases, jewery cases, anything major electronic ...... Thank God for Modern Technology !!! ~~~~~

Jamie - Where do you get your dessicant?

Any recommendations on ounces per cubic foot?

There is a zillion place to buy on the internet :

This is one, and it has a chart ~~~~ NOW, let me state this, you can never put to muchdessicant in your vaults, pistol cabnets, etc , etc ~~~~ We have many, and several gun vaults holds over 60 long guns, andput somewhere in the area of 3-5 lbs. in each. Yes, I know it's a overkill, but don't have to worry about moisture.

And in the powder magazines, we usally have in the area of 7-9 lbs. in them >>>>

Withmy Sig .45 cal that I keep around for home defense on the first of every month I unload the magazines and load different ones. My idea is that I am not keeping the mag springs compressed indefinitely.
