Cheapest High Intake Yet.

After reading all the high intake stories I thought I'd take a shot at one. I pulled off the standard intake and started trying all the leftover 1.5" abs fittings i had on hand. After 3 combinations I hit on one that worked. Think proper names are a 45 and a 22.5 ell. The kicker was the adaptor needed between the original hose and the 1.5" abs ell. I found an unused 1.5" one way valve and removed the rubber flapper. The rest fit nicely. a 4' section of 1.5" abs pipe and another 45 was used. Pipe is secured by zip ties and the abs fittings were glued. Pics show the 1/2" i removed from original hose and the heat gun to get the modified adaptor back on. For me the cost was effort only but I can't see $5 in parts here if that. Took a while with bad hands so sorry if workmanship is a bit crude.

I've learned a lot on this site and hope this gives back a bit.

FWIW i am really not happy Kubota waited until the new models to correct this serious design defect. The filter pics show it all. I had to beat the dust off the used one so you could tell it was a filter -- it only had a years use and has been blown off twice in between.

The other issue is that it is a bit louder but i like it. Comments?

Looks real good, and you can't beat the price!!!

Re. "The kicker was the adaptor needed between the original hose and the 1.5" abs ell. I found an unused 1.5" one way valve and removed the rubber flapper."
When I find myself in this situation, I turn to Fernco adapters. They have one for just about everything.

That's just what I did, but used a 90 at the top with a taper- cut with the hack saw. No complaints and it's been several years. I also got tired of buying filters because of the poor location on the original intake. The only thing I have had to do is replace the cable ties once. I need to make a bracket one of these days but that is low on my list of things to do when the ties work so well. bordercollie

Does the taper cut alter the sound? A pic would be nice if avail. FWIW i went to a big box store and was wrong about prices! ABS and pvc fittings have gone ballistic in price lately.

Wish I could have done the same, but on an 1140 there is very small space to work with.... won't accommodate "found" fittings such as you used.... at least I couldn't find any that worked so went with factory high rise

congrats. i should of done this i paid 265.00 for factory snorkel kit for my 1140 and felt so stupid when i got home and opened the box. the most expensive thing was a piece of metal pipe. i could of made the whole thing out of pvc for 20 bucks the only thing informative about the instructions was the rotating the filter housing 180 degree.kubota done had a plate over a hole in the metal side it was so simple i felt sick installing it.by the way its not water tite at all wonder were thay got away with calling it a snorkel kit

bad hands or not you done a pretty good job and for way less than even the shipping on a factory intake.it's always best to do it yourself for two reasons 1 you get to know your machine better and 2 it's cheaper.

Great job and I like the inventiveness of this group. Right on!

My only concern would be that you are careful about inside diameters.

Diesels like lots of air and any restrictions would surely hurt the horsepower.

One should always check for the smallest inside diameter of the existing system and aim to meet or exceed that dimension. Most likely at the intake manifold, but it could be smaller in other areas.

:myopinion:

Nice job Vintovka. (The original post was from so long ago I don't even know if he is still active on the board or not.)

Yeah, Kubota enjoys those after market sales... I bought the light kit (for on top of the cab) for $180.00 and learned my lesson. Went to Advance Auto and bought the same damn thing for $20.00 off the shelf. Different name, but same size light, etc. Put the Kubota kit on the front and the Advance Auto set on the back and I defy you to find the difference.

No , the taper doesn't help with the noise but it does make it harder for it to suck up stuff. Back years ago when I did it , I remember one on the forum members on the old site, telling the story of a kid and an eye ball or something sinister like ,that getting sucked out. Hense the taper- it makes it harder for the rain to get in too. No kids here but still.......gross. Bordercollie,

Thanks for the all the info and kind words. I had checked the ID of the existing intake and it was around 1.5" so that is what i used. The factory intake "mouth" is about twice the area of the 1.5" pipe and may be for sound suppresion and air flow effect. Didn't glue the top ell on so I can play with other shapes.

FWIW: I did the rest of the 400 hour maintenance today and it took me all of 8hrs because i'm not so fast. Changing the fuel filter with one hand is a messy experience even though i waited till the tank was almost empty. I tested it out after and found the performance was noticeably improved and the engine started faster too. I wish I'd done the intake mod long ago.

What diameter of pipe to you need in order to keep good airflow?

It looks like 1 1/4 PVC (schedule 40) would be a perfect fit to connect to the existing air intake, but will that provide enough air? It seems like it would be to me since it slides right into the existing hose clamp fitting.

Thanks.

I have been reading this thread and wondering what the big deal is. I decided to have a look at my filter and man it was clogged right up!

I bought a wood chipper for my tractor a month or so ago and we have been blowing the chips into the RTV's box. I didn't even think about the fact the air cleaner sucks it's clean air from the corner of the box. Every time we started the machine it sucked in a bunch of chips just like a vacuum cleaner!

A trip to HD, 6' length of 1 1/2" abs, 2 x 45 fittings, couple of 90's, short piece of 1 1/4" abs to attach to the hose and it is done! This will make a big difference. Looks good and was very easy to do.

Thanks for all the advice!

Hope it works well for you. What were the Kubota engineers thinking with the original intake?
Hopefully they monitor sites like this and will take notice. For you guys with energy left this would make a good aftermarket/ebay kit to make up and sell. Just send me 10%

Just an update. After 4 hours of dusty roads the filter still looks new. I did notice the abs pipe must create a static charge causing dust to stick to the inside surfaces. Its not a big deal and kind of an added electrostatic filtering effect. Doesn't make it all the way to cartridge and can be easily cleaned. Still no loss of power and the jake break sound is kinda cool.

Well just to revive this otherise comatose forum i'd like to add that since the new intake my top speed has increased. Rarely go fast but needed to get to a friends place via a flat paved road. Top speed went to 35 mph and scared the fecal matter right out of me (and my hat flew off). Best before was 25 on same stretch. Not sure it was all the intakes doing but seems to be. Need to get a chin strap like Hermann Goerings. Speaking of Nazis the local gestapo will really go after you on public roads if your not street legal - hence the need for speed. A tractor with a triangle sign no problem but the RTVs are treated differently.

Really? I'm going to end my coma in the next day or two and take the GPS for a spin. I have had the hat problem but I never checked my speed.
