Question on hydraulic

I just want to see if anyone has had this happend

Last week I was on a nice ride in the woods and I stopedto put it into 4wd and moved up a rough hill and when I got to the top (about 50 yds) I was dumping hydraulic fluid like made. I was a long walk back to the truck and Trailer. I brought it to the shop and finaly found the source. The tank had a hole in it about the size of your finger. The odd part it was not a puncture --- the rubber had melted. You can stick your finger through the hole and the thank is real soft around the hole. Where it is there is nothing that could get hot enough to melt it.

My question is : Could the fluid get hot enough to melt in from the inside out and if so what could cause it to get that hot

Thanks for your input

Hey Bill,

I haven't heard of this one before...

Is the tank you're referring to the one that's in the rear/center of the RTV (as pictured here)?

If so, that's for the hyd. dump and not related to the tranny (which means you didn't need to walk back to the truck).

Where exactly was the hole?

Yes that is the tank --- if you are looking from the rear of the unit (like your pic) the hole is on the rear of the tank on the bottom back corner across from the tail pipe but there is about 4 or 5 in. between the pipe and the tank so I dont think the heat came from the pipe

It is my luck -- I guess I needed the walk anyway (at least that is what my wife said)

I'd propose you repair or replace the tank, refill the fluid and test/check the operation of the dump bed.

It should be idle and no fluid flowing when your control arm is in a neutral position but if something is wrong (e.g. it's trying to lower the bed when it's already in the down position), it can get the fluid hot.

Listen for noises and check the temp on the fluid lines, the tank and hyd cylinder itself.

Unlikely, but also check the muffler and make sure there's no hole in the muffler itself that may be blowing hot exhaust in that direction.

are you sure you melted the tank and it didn't punture it with a high pressure return flow feed back?? you could have a faulty valve and it's letting way to much presure back into the tank and it just ate away at the tank wall. to me if the oil got hot enough to melt the plactic take then the o rings and the engine would have shut down or a temp light would have come on way before that happened.

My guess would be that a stick got jammed into the space between muffler and tank . with the bouncing around it could have moved and melted a hole then fallen out. I seem to attract sticks and other debris fairly often and almost always they enter when backing around. I have gotten in the habit of raising the bed when I return and looking for stuff that should not be there. Bill B.

Are you also sure that the bracket that holds the tank to the frame is NOT broken. Is the tankflopping around a bit or nice and snug/tight? I had to repair the bad weld on my bracket twice and then ended up redesigning a "no fail" bracket.............Each time it broke it was doing stuff out in the woods........Since the real repair no problems.............Dennis

can you post a picture of the hole?? i would like to see what the sides of the hole look like to see if they look melted or cracked.

I am sorry but I hauled the RTV to the dealer so I cant take pictures --- But what I can tell all of you guys that responed

1) the tank straps are all secure

2) I dont think a stick put the hole in the tank because the plastic in the hole push outward and not pushed in like it should if an object push through the tank. it appears that pressure pused outward.

3) I have no way to measure the pressures so I just took it to the dealer .

MY dealer said the he had never seen this before

thanks guys for all your advise --- all of it is needed

when my dealer let me know I will post the info

Just thought I would give you all an update

Checked on my machine today --- they had to order a tank ---they have a puzzled look on their face --- until they get a new tank they can't test anything --- more to come next week

I thought I would give you an update on my RTV

I got it back from the dealer today. They put a new tank on it. --They found nothing wrongwith the presures --- all they could say was for some reason the oil got to hot and metled the tank. There is 2 linesine the tank one leaving and on returning. It melted the one returning and also melted 2 other holes below that line.

He said that the lever may not of been completly disengaged and was building upheat in the tank. He also said this could show up it you tried to left to much weight(I am not going to load that much weight)Ha!. I just dont use it that much except to hunt from. He said they put a metal tank on the model that is the workmodel. He thought I should maybe puta cooler on the pump. I may do that. I dont think it cost much. I guess I will try it for a while and see what happens.

I agree --- I tried to get them to put the metal tank on it but he said they would need to order a lot of ditterent fittings

Brian

I sent you the picture

thanks for your help

I think you all will be interested in the picture

Bill

Here's the picture

Bill - I believe your issue with posting was it's size (2.7M). It needed to be shrunk down a bit first.

Brian

Thanks to Brian we have the picture.

As you can see the center hole is the supply line. The top right is the return line(melted off) and the two holes below melted through.

Again Thanks Brian for your help
