RTV Starter ?

Re: RTV Starter ?

Ihad an intermittent short in a battery on my Gator and it would do the clicking thing. It was okay with the lights but under the starter load it would short and wouldn't crank sometimes. You would have to turn the key 5 to 20 times before it would start. When we replaced the battery it took care of everything.

I recently had a bad "lock out" sensor on the PTO lever of a Kubota 4310 that kept the engine from starting. Cleaned up the sensor and all was well. But I was in the shed and not 5 miles deep in alligators at night. Japanese electrics are not the best - but better than the English.

I always keep a tool kit under the RTV hood now.

My starter would not do anything except click...click...click. I noticed it was -12 degrees celcius.

I am starting to think the starter or silinoid got water into it, it froze and that temporarily seized things. When it thawed out she started. Any views on this????

Mannie,

I've encountered this as well. On really cold days, the battery just doesn't have the CCA's to turn over the engine. In my case, there was nothing wrong with the starter or solenoid. I just gave it a jump-start and it was fine.

Re: RTV Starter ?

I would make sure the dealer understands that you are having issues and if he doesn't want to replace the starter now before the warranty runs out, that he will take care of you in the next few months if it happens again.Everything works better when it is warm, including me.On such a new machine you shouldn't have any problems at all to worry about and your battery should be good. If a vehicle isn't in gear good it sometimes won't start..but the clicking at the starter...I hear a new one is close to 200 $ not rebuilt of coarse. If it is getting water in it now it will be problems down the road. I have used the heck out ofmy RTV and at 2357 hrs and tons of mud and cow stuff no problems with moisture in the starter. Good Luck.. Bordercollie

Re: RTV Starter ?

I would check your voltage going thru the neutral safety switch. low amps thru safety switches can cause the solenoid to not engage. when you jump it at the starter you are hitting the solenoid with the full amps available to the starter. moisture in the switch can cause an intermittent problem also. Re: RTV Starter ?

What about the connections going to the starter ?

When youturn the key " ON " & use theglow plug, does thelights in the dash show up ??Can you still hear the " clicking" sound of the timer ?

ANOTHER THING :

Turn the key and hold to the right as you were trying to start , then, move the gear selector up and down in a fast motion and see if it tries to hit..... I was told to do that with mine to check on the safety switch on the tranny ~~~~~~~~~

Re: RTV Starter ?

Good info Jamie. The machine is in the shop right now and they are not moving very fast due to all the snow removal equipment being prepped. They told me I would have it back by the middle of next week. I shall keep you posted.

Re: RTV Starter ?

UPDATE DEC 2-08 Dealer called me today with an update. He said they took the starter apart and removed some condensation. However, as you recall in my earlier post the 900 would not start when it was very cold....below zero. By the time I got the machine to the dealer the temperature increased to above zero....and of course it started right away. So now they tell me that they can not do anything because it starts! Warranty runs out Dec 10-08. They suggested I leave the machine until it gets below zero and then they would check it again under warranty. That could be a month! This whole thing sucks! HELP!

Re: RTV Starter ?

Just spoke to another KUBOTA service tech. He told me he has come across water/moisture in the starter and freezing up. Seizing it. He suggested the next time it does not start put a blow dryer on the starter for a while and see what happens. I guess it's worth a try.

Another thing to consider is when you're expecting cold weather, before you shut down your RTV, tilt your cargo bed up and leave it up. It's a lot easier to get to the engine without having to manually lift the box while fighting the hyd cyl.

Great !!! Another accessory !!! Does anyone know where I can find a Kubota Hair Dryer ? And, of course, going to haveto have a offical holster for it.....

Hope they have one in 12 Volt, or going to load up the Onan Generator just to run the damn hair dryer back in the swamps !!!!!

I also have had some problems with my starter ! Now, I will be have to carry three rifles, one pistol, ammo, WIFE , strong box that carries everything in it from zip-ties, tools, tofence pliers., chains, snatch blocks, cell phones, two-way radios, chain saw, remote controls for the Go-Light & Sirius Radio, knifes, axe handle, slip-proof mats, camo-blind material, deer / hog loader, deer and hogs ( on the way out ) , Cuddeback cameras and extra batteries and cards, spare clothes and boots, AND NOW, a hair dyer, which my wife is probobly going to love !!!! I Know leaving something out, but, why can't the dealer just be nice and replace the damn starter for Mannie, wouldn't it just be easier for everybody and the man can go on with life. For Kubota aready knows that they are having problems with starters, and they will replace them, all the dealer has to do is just swap them out ~~~~~~~ it's just that simple !!! Our dealer here, is going to be replace as soon as hunting season is over....(that was discussed at our last phone conversation ) ....he said just bring him the RTV, it's just a matter of finding time to get the machine there !!!!

Re: RTV Starter ?

Two Guns is absolutely right. !!! This starter should be fixed or you should look the dealer in the eye [AND HE YOU] and have the understanding UNDERSTOOD about replacing it under the warranty.. I sometimes let folksrun over me , but then my blue eyes turndark and then "beware the wrath of bordercollie"!!!! I would in no way shape or form use a hair dryer on such an expensive piece of equipment . Tell the dealer you want his personal home phone number and you will call him to come warm it up. There , I need another blood pressure pill. Take care of yourself out there cause no one else will except for maybe a few of us forum members. Good luck. Bordercollie

Re: RTV Starter ?

Jamie, Bordercollie, you guys are the best man. I was just laughing my head off! You are both right though. Here is a copy of my last email;Dear Grant, I have been reviewing our discussions regarding the starting problem and feel I need to give you additional information so we can proceed to resolve this matter to my satisfaction. The failure to start has occurred at least 15 times to date with the last event being the most serious as it did not turn over/start no matter what I did. My warranty runs out December 10th 2008 therefore resolution at this time is critical for me. The past incidences of starter failure have not all been temperature sensitive. It has been above zero during many of these scenarios. Your suggestion to leave the machine and wait for colder weather just does not do me any good. I know the problem exists and I need my machine back by this Friday at noon time as I am heading back to Bancroft (2.5 hours) where I live. I brought the machine all the way down here as there is no dealer up there so the logistics make this matter even more urgent. I feel that the only way to solve this starter problem now is to install a new one under warranty. I cannot be expected to come back and forth every time to investigate the failing starter situation as I know it will reoccur. I am not happy at the moment with the current situation. Please speak to your service manager and talk to KUBOTA asap. I know that if I take the machine back now without the appropriate repairs I will be in the same situation next week and then I will have to deal with the lack of warranty on this re occurring problem. Please call me as soon as you have had a chance to discuss this matter and provide me with a solution. AFTER I EMAILED THIS LETTER THE SERVICE MANAGER CALLED WITH HIS NOSE OUT OF JOINT. SAID HE WOULD TALK TO KUBOTA. WE SHALL SEE WHAT TOMORROW BRINGS.

Re: RTV Starter ?

Just a friendly little note for a little man down south ~~~

***A gun and akind word has ALWAYS went further than just akind word alone!!!!

In a world of compromise, some don't >>>> down here, these corn-feed boys don't play " Mickey Mouse" >>> they play for keeps. You start that kind of " service " to folks down here. Your business has got some big trouble . Now that being said, people down here get along just great with our tractor dealers.....Please don't get me wrong.... we all have our ups and downs..... But just for example, my dealer has even offered to send a RTV to me and let me us it until they put a new starter on mine. I refused and said, thanks just the same. I'll just keep a running mine until the time comes for me to do it.... Another reason, I have mine rigged out for the hunting, that has much to do with the keeping of our own .... Never been one to barrow equipment anyway. I will say though, we have some super dealers down here. Seems like everyone really wants to help the next man.....

I have heard some " horror " stories about some dealers . All I can say, send 'em down here for a few weeks. They would for sure get educated how to treat folks befor he headed back up that a way !!!

And then again, they are some " SUPER " dealers out there... To bad some gotta make it bad for others !!!!

Re: RTV Starter ?

I know for a fact,if our dealers down here can " fiddlefart " around and get us a replacement starter, any of them can. Just takes a little effort in their part. Yes,discussed before, could bring it to the local starter / alternator repair shop. But, if the dealeris willing to go the extra mile to make one smile. GREAT !!!!Talked to him yesterday, ( he called me ) and checked upon the situation. He said we will go any route I wish !!!!That's why I spend myhard earned money there !!!!!

Re: RTV Starter ?

About 10 years ago I bought a used Kabota tractor from a local Kubota dealer. There was a warning dash light out that I wanted repaired before I took possession of it. The dealer said yes and delivered it a week later. About a year later I needed to open the dash and to my suprise I found the light bulb had been removed. I fired off a letter to both the dealer and Kubota and received no response from either.

Fast forward to summer 2006-My business goes to Thomson Tractor in Morehead, Kentucky. It's a family business that can't be beat. I had the window latches replaced free of charge when they proved to be defective, they mailed ordered a set of dorr hinges when I bent them, and I received a free 50 hour service from them.

Man times you do not know how a dealer will treat you until after the fact. In my opinion some are like crooked used car salesmen.

Bad srvice is Hollbrook Tractor, Stanton, Kentucky.

Good service is Thompson's Tractor, Morehead, Kentucky.

Re: RTV Starter ?

Being we live on theLouisiana/ Mississippi line, right next to the Mississippi River. The closes' dealer is in Natchez, Ms., maybe 5-7 miles away. During my looking into purchasing the RTV, I tried my BEST to get that dealer in Natchezto talk with me. NOTHING, didn't care if they sold a machine or not, wouldn't talk " tractor " with us, wouldn't return our phone calls.... I was fixin' to purchase one within a day or so...... And after doing some researce, I was told " PLEASE DON'T " make the mistake and purchase there !!!

Anyway, I ended up going to another dealership some 55-60 miles away. BEST thing I ever did. Made a Perfect deal, man stands behind his customers. And made the best of friends at that dealership. I could go on & on about these people. Best on planet earth !!!

Since then, the dealer in Natchez has sold out to a dealership from Vicksburg, Mississippi.... Dealership is in the same location, but different owners and new buildings, service shops, and personel ...... I've stopped by and talked to these folks, and seem to be up and up !!!! Best deals are still in the dealership away, but it's nice to know the dealership now in Natchez is got some back-bone behind them .....

Our dealer is Nelson Tractor & Equipment ,,,,,, Winnsboro, Louisiana

Re: RTV Starter ?

I agree. A Kubota dealer opened a site not20 miles from me after I bought my RTV. I went there for all my warranty work. There was a really nice parts guy there named Heath. Well, he would greet me by name when I went into the door. He made my warranty service agood experience and I bought fluid and filters there and parts I needed like the shaft bearing and ujoint assembly there. Well I went there one day and he was gone . Come to find out the company had "cleaned house". They replaced him with what {I will be nice and lady like]and willcall aknot head. I guess he thought I was a dumbo that would actually pay2 x the ratefor some workthat I was pricing.Besides being arrogant, he was just plain rude. Well anyway thanks to Two Guns advice, Ihandled my problem thru other avenues... I was blessed to have a Daddy that showed me how to do things and have some common sense too .I also grew up in the 60's and 70's and know the value of a dollar. Remember the Arab oil embargo? I sure do ...we hauled scrap iron on the weekend from my Dad's shop to put my sister thru college that year.....Hard times make you learn how to do for yourself and appreciate every dollar. That knot head has no idea that I know how to weld ,sandblast or that I drive a skid steer and tractor everyday .But then, that shouldn't matter. Ialways try to be polite and put myself in the other's person's shoes..I since ordered the shop and parts manualwhich will pay for themselvesin short order.I ordered these and nowall my supplies from our site folks at Messicks . I justplaced an order last week and have it here ready for when I need it.Really nice folks there and the freight is very reasonable.Bordercollie
